Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

Māori Language Week

We are on a continuous journey to incorporate te ao Māori into the way we work, communicate and express ideas.

Like many, we have a long way to go, so Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is a great opportunity for us to put greater focus and energy into te reo, making it a regular element of how we communicate.

Clink on the link below to access some great resources from Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission) to help you on your reo journey.

He pepeha mō ngā tāngata katoa o Aotearoa
Introducing yourself in te reo Māori

A pepeha is traditional way of introducing yourself within te ao Māori. This form of introduction allows those you are meeting to have an understanding of your background, where you are from and where there might be existing relationships and/or common connections and understandings.
Below is an example of a pepeha anyone can use.

Ko ______ te maunga e rū nei taku ngākau
______ is the mountain that speaks to my heart

Ko ______ te awa e mahea nei aku māharahara
______ is the river that alleviates my worries

Nō ______ ahau
I am from ______

E mihi ana ki ngā tohu o nehe, o ______ e noho nei au
I recognise the ancestral and spiritual landmarks of ______ where I live

Ko ______ tōku ingoa
My name is ______

Nō reirā, tēnā koutou katoa
Thus, my acknowledgement to you all
