Waikato Climathon

As part of our contribution to SDG 13 Climate Action, alongside Trust Waikato, Hamilton City Council and the University of Waikato, the Waikato Wellbeing Project co-sponsored the Impact Hub’s 2023 Waikato Climathon.

The second Waikato Climathon was held 2023, culminating in an ideathon at Waikato University on 20 May. WWP was a co-sponsor for the events. The ideathon was preceded by a series of events held across towns in the Waikato, supporting local climate leaders who are showing the way and inspiring others to act.

At the ideathon, 75% of participants came with no or little experience in the climate action space, and 68% of this year’s applicants being brand-new to the Climathon community. Nine teams were formed, and all pitched their ideas. Out of the 62 registered participants, 45 followed through to completion.

Te Pukenga’s Design Factory helped to facilitate the ideation/design process and will work with the winners to help them turn their ideas into action. Joe Wilson volunteered as a judge and Amber Hammill also attended the ideathon. We will keep working with the Design Factory to support the ideathon winners to turn their ideas into reality.

A summary of the key results of the Climathon are shown above.
